The fifth Caroline’s Room is located in Connecticut Children’s
Medical Center’s newly expanded and enhanced
NICU. This room celebrated its official opening in June, 2006. Seventy-five
members of the hospital staff, administration, and supporters from the
community attended the ribbon cutting ceremony. A
professional interior designer donated her time and expertise, and created
an exceptionally warm, attractive, and functional space. The room has
a sleep sofa (for parents to use when spending the night before taking
their baby home), wing chair, table, bench, brass lamps and wall sconces,
wallpaper, and several pieces of art. It also contains a sink and has
an adjoining bathroom. A key feature of the CCMC Caroline’s Room
is that it is wired for medical monitoring equipment. This makes it
possible for babies to spend the night in the room before going home.
Funding for this room was achieved through
donations from local individuals, corporations, and foundations. Costs
were kept to a minimum with the donation of professional services and
specially reduced prices on the furniture and fabrics. The approximate
cost of the CCMC Caroline’s Room was $15,000.
