SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center is a 190-bed, not-for-profit medical center with an over 50-year history in the St. Louis community. It is part of SSM Health Care, one of the largest Catholic health care systems in the country. SSM is sponsored by the Franciscan Sisters of Mary and owns, operates and manages 19 acute care hospitals in four states — Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin and Oklahoma.
Cardinal Glennon is also a teaching hospital affiliated with the Saint Louis University Schools of Medicine and Nursing.
The sun displayed prominently atop the SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center name has been the hospital's symbol for many years. It means hope, warmth, caring, commitment and excellence. The child-like writing of the hospital's name symbolizes the entire reason for the hospital's existence: We are here for the children, now and in the future.
Throughout its existence, SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center has lived out the mission and vision of its namesake. We are committed to providing the best medical care, the best education and the best research possible for all children in need.
The infants that spend time in the Dana Brown Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center become living proof of the consistently high level of care our team delivers. With new technology, 23-week-old gestation babies (those born in the sixth month of pregnancy) are surviving conditions that would have been incomprehensible before the 1980s.
Having a premature baby is a very stressful time, and the goal at Cardinal Glennon is to make the time families spend at the hospital as comfortable as possible.
The Cardinal Glennon NICU is recognized as a Neonatal Center of Excellence by the American Accreditation Healthcare Commission.
In 2007, Cardinal Glennon opened the Dana Brown Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the first-all private NICU in St. Louis. The Cardinal Glennon NICU has 60 beds and plenty of room for parents to stay at their baby’s bedside. The Cardinal Glennon NICU has dedicated rooms for twin babies. We offer other comforts of home like a parent lounge with Wi-Fi access for parents to step away.
The nurses and physicians in the nursery consider parents to be an integral part of the care that babies receive. Parents are closely involved in all medical decision-making, and are welcome to visit 24 hours a day.
Often, the care and compassion our families receive results in a special bond being formed between them and the medical staff. The NICU walls are lined with quilts of imprints of babies' feet that have grown strong and gone home. These colorful imprints posted for everyone to see serve as an inspiration, a reminder that even the smallest of patients can grow up healthy and strong.
