TAMPA GENERAL HOSPITAL, TAMPA, FLORIDA

Tampa General Hospital (TGH) is a private not-for-profit academic medical center, and one of the most comprehensive medical facilities in West Central Florida, serving a dozen counties with a population in excess of 4 million. As one of the largest hospitals in Florida, Tampa General is licensed for 988 beds, and with over 6,000 employees, is one of the region's largest employers.  It is the primary teaching affiliate of the University of South Florida School of Medicine.

One of TGH’s many centers of excellence is its Children’s Medical Center, which includes a 52 bed Level III neonatal intensive care unit.  More than 5,500 babies are born at TGH each year, and approximately 15% of them require the specialized care of the NICU.  In addition, as a regional neonatal referral center, seriously ill newborns from as far away as 150 miles are transferred to TGH.

In response to demand and need, TGH is currently constructing a new, state-of-the-art NICU.  The expanded unit’s number of beds will increase from 52 to 82.  The new facility will include a variety of special features, including increased square footage per bed, the utilization of private beds and small pods, more caregiving and personal space at the bedside, variable lighting, and the incorporation of family support space.

In keeping with its goal of providing a more private setting for NICU families, TGH is planning to include two Caroline’s Rooms in its new NICU.
